Rory Kinnear

When it was announced that Matt Smith would be leaving Doctor Who last week, it didn’t take long before the internet started speculating about who the next Doctor would be. And it seemed like fans were hoping for a drastic change, entertaining the idea that the BBC might go for a female or black Doctor. But, the latest reports suggest that the twelfth incarnation of The Doctor won’t be breaking the mold.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Skyfall‘s Rory Kinnear will be following Smith. An undisclosed source revealed that the actor “has been offered the part,” and producers are just “waiting to hear if he will accept.” The source also called him “the perfect choice.”

This news doesn’t really come as a shock. Kinnear was first linked to the role of Doctor Who even before Smith announced that he would be stepping down. But, at the time, he dismissed the rumors, calling himself a “decoy.”

Kinnear previously played the MI6 officer Bill Tanner in Skyfall and Quantum of Solace; He won acclaim for his stage performances in productions of Othello, Mary Stuart and Hamlet. If he does accept the offer of playing the next Doctor Who, then the TV show would constitute as his biggest project yet.

What do you think of the news? Are you on board with this casting choice?
