For years, fans of cheesy 1980s action cinema dreamed of the day in which hyper-muscular and monosyllabic stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone would star together in what could only be the greatest cheesy action film ever. But then it never happened in the 1980s. Or the 1990s. Or the 2000s. Finally, in 2010, we got The Expendables, in which Schwarzenegger popped up with Stallone for all of five minutes, and then hobbled around for a bit in The Expendables 2. But now, finally, in their mid-60s, Stallone and Schwarzenegger have finally teamed up together for a full-length film, Escape Plan.
In the movie, Stallone plays Ray Breslin, “the world’s foremost authority on structural security.” Breslin is initially tasked with breaking out of a mysterious and high-tech lockdown facility called The Tomb, but is then wrongly imprisoned there. He must then join forces with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Emil Rottmayer in a plot to escape from the inescapable prison fort. And hey, it has a poster.
There’s no telling how good the film will be, given the varied quality of such comeback vehicles as The Expendables series, Bullet to the Head, and The Last Stand, but hey—action fans, the film you’ve waited for is finally happening. More or less.
Co-starring Jim Caviezel, Curtis Jackson, Amy Ryan, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Vinnie Jones, Escape Plan was directed by Mikael Håfström and is set for an October 18th release date.
