Due to the fact that Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel is now up following his completion of Iron Man 3, the actor is reportedly in renegotiations to appear in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, and is apparently pushing hard to receive something close to the hundreds of millions he managed to make off of the original Avengers. But with Iron Man 4’s future uncertain, and Downey reportedly disliking his time spent in the iron suit, rumors have been building that Downey would either be replaced or Tony Stark would be killed early on (this is a Joss Whedon flick, after all).
But not so, says Whedon. In a recent interview with The Daily Beast (via Cinema Blend), Whedon explained how integral Downey Jr. is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how he will not direct The Avengers 2 without Downey Jr. smirking his way through the role:
“He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine.”
Despite the rumors that Marvel has considered replacing the actor, thanks to the wild success of the Iron Man franchise (as well as the first Avengers film), Downey Jr. seems to know that he has Marvel right where he wants them, and we can all expect to see him glibly smug it up for at least one more Marvel film.
