When Insidious came out in 2010, it was a surprise hit, which meant that director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell were brought back for more with this fall’s Insidious 2. But it seems unlikely that this will spawn a trilogy as Wan has been recruited to helm Fast and Furious 7, and so this may be his last hurrah in horror.
The second film brings back the primary cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins to face another round of possessions and weirdness. But as was well established in the first film, it’s not the house that’s haunted. Here it seems to be Patrick Wilson’s character, who brought something back from the other side. The first film was Wan’s attempt at doing something similar to Poltergiest after being typecast as the director of the first Saw film. So perhaps this is his opportunity to make a better movie that Poltergiest II: The Other Side. Here’s that trailer:
Wan has been keeping busy as he’s also got The Conjuring coming out this summer, which got rated R for its general tone, and will likely start shooting Fast and Furious 7 later this summer. Which makes this look like something tossed off, but as the first film was a huge success on a miniscule budget, a sequel was going to happen one way or the other. Insidious 2 opens September 13.
