Though it feels like the paper isn’t dry or even signed for Sam Mendes‘s return to James Bond, we’re already getting casting notices for the film. It seems likely that Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes and Naomie Harris will definitely be returning, but the latest word is that Penelope Cruz will be joining the cast.
This comes from Yahoo, and they note that at 40, Cruz will be the oldest “Bond Girl” in cinema, and that she follows her husband’s footsteps, as she is married to Skyfall‘s Javier Bardem. As the director isn’t officially signed (even though it feels like that discussion is over), and no script has been written, this feels like putting the cart before the horse, but who are we to doubt the good folks at Yahoo. At least they don’t have a movie that’s all about their operations coming out in a week.
As for Cruz, she’s a wonderful actress, and it’s a great choice in the scheme of things. The Pedro Almodovar regular — and Oscar winner for her turn in Woody Allen‘s Vicky Christina Barcelona – has proven that she’s more than her model good looks time and time again. Hollywood fell in love with in the late 90′s, and she’s been bouncing back and forth between big budget American films like Vanilla Sky and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and smaller (usually better) work ever since. This movie keeps sounding more awesome.
