If you were alarmed over the strange sound that resonated around the world, don’t worry. It was just the sound of millions of Doctor Who fangirls/fanboys screaming out in pain over the announced departure of the most popular regenerated form of the Doctor at this point.

For some fans they saw it coming months ago, while for others it was a complete shock. BBC officially announced on Saturday afternoon that actor Matt Smith, who was made famous for playing the 11th Doctor, will be ending his reign during the annual Christmas special of Doctor Who. Either at the start or the end of the Christmas special the Doctor will regenerate into the 12th incarnation. There’s no word at the moment as to who will play the latest version of the Doctor.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat spoke out on the announcement:

“[G]reat actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt — bow ties were never cooler,” he said. “Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now — all unknowing, just going about their business — is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and ‘Doctor Who’ will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”

Matt Smith didn’t stay silent over the announcement either. He said sweet words to all those who supported the actor throughout the years playing the youngest Doctor that the show’s ever seen:

“It’s been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys.”

While Smith will be leaving to pursue a career more along the Hollywood — scene since he’ll be appearing in How to Catch a Monster – Moffat is signed on to be the showrunner for the upcoming 8th season. Fans have already been speculating as to who could not only be a suitable 12th Doctor, but whether or not it’s time for a major change in his appearance. Some have suggested that they bring out an older veteran actor to play the Doctor, breaking the trend of younger actors and getting a new generation of fans used to the inconsistent nature of his physical form. Others believe that now is the time to bring either a ethnically diverse Doctor or perhaps a woman. I secretly hope a veteran actor along the lines of Rik Mayall would fill the spot, but we won’t know until we get closer towards the now widely anticipated Christmas special. Personally I think that we’ll get a hint who our next Doctor will be a few weeks from now at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Who do you think should play the 12th Doctor?
