2013-movie-preview-kick-ass-2

Iron Man 3 hit in May, Man of Steel is coming out in less than two weeks, and The Wolverine is due in late July, so each month this summer will have its own comic book movie. But what about August? Well, that’s got Kick-Ass 2. The sequel to the 2010 film, which played with the idea of what it would be like for real people to act like superheroes, hits screens August 16, and now there’s a new red-band NSFW international trailer.

And this trailer builds on what we’ve seen previously. Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) and Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) are back at it, and now Chris D’Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), the son of a gangster killed by the duo, has donned a costume and renamed himself “The Motherf___er.” This points out the R-rated sensibilities of these films, a rarity in these four-quadrant comic book movie days. Here’s the trailer:

Kick-Ass 2 looks slightly more polished now than it did in the first couple trailers (more time for post-production), and it could have some fun action sequences, which is the best that we can hope for from the film. But it’s ace in the hole seems to be Jim Carrey playing Colonel Stars and Stripes. If his performance is fun it could kick the movie up a notch, because it’s been a while since Carrey got to do something that was crazy and good. Generally he’s been doing stuff that is generic and bad. Oh well. We hold out hope.
