For those of you still in shock over the news that Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who at the end of the year, here’s one for the fans: Karen Gillan, who used to play Amy Pond on the series, has been added to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. along with Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro. Though details for both characters are being kept under wraps, sources say that Gillan’s been cast as a villain.

Gillan left Doctor Who last September along with co-star Arthur Darvill, but she’s caught a very lucky break. Not only is she the first female villain to be cast, but word is she will play the film’s lead female baddie. She’ll be joining actors Lee Pace and Michael Rooker, who have already been cast as villains.

Word on Benicio Del Toro’s role is non-existent, and we’d think if he was playing one of the Guardians we’d know. It seems they’d announce if he was playing Rocket Raccoon, though it’s possible he’s playing Groot, the sentient tree guardian.

Prior to landing Guardians, Gillan had mainly appeared in TV movies and shows (including Doctor Who). She’s currently set to appear in Oculus, The List and Not Another Happy Ending. Del Toro is known for his Oscar-winning turn in Traffic, and for playing Fenster in The Usual Suspects. More recently, he was in Oliver Stone‘s Savages.

Guardians of the Galaxy is written and directed by James Gunn, based on the eponymous Marvel Comics team of superheros and follows the story of an American pilot who goes on the run with a group of futuristic ex-cons after they acquire a mysterious coveted object. The cast also includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, and, as of last week, Glenn Close.

Shooting is suppose to begin later this month in the U.K.

What do you think? Will Karen Gillan make a good villain? Who do you think Benicio Del Toro will play?
