Though the first Percy Jackson film, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, was tepidly received when launched in February of 2010, it did just well enough to inspire a sequel. Where the first film was loaded down with having to introduce all the characters and their world, it’s possible that the follow up, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters could keep the franchise alive for another adventure by being more exciting than the last.
At least, that’s what the trailer is selling, which is filled with a lot of big budget 3D spectacle. The film stars Logan Lerman (remember when he was nearly Spider-Man?) as the titular Percy, who’s tasked with saving his village/school by finding the golden fleece. That means going to the Bermuda triangle to face, well, it looks like a sea of monsters. Joining him in the film are Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Douglas Smith, Leven Rambin, Nathan Fillion, Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Mary Birdsong. Here’s that trailer:
This looks pretty big, which is surprising as it was probably made cheaper than the last film. But that may be because The Lightning Thief was filled with more name players (Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Rosario Dawson, etc.) who may have eaten at the budget, where this focuses more on the kids and the name brand, so the filmmakers may have had more money for the kid-friendly action set pieces. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens August 9, and maybe it’s fun.
Did you see the first film, and will you watch this?
