As is the case with nearly every superhero film in preproduction, fans of The Avengers are desperately trying to deduce who writer and director Joss Whedon will place in The Avengers 2 as the film’s Big Bad. And considering the fact that Marvel comics super-heavy Thanos appeared in the first film’s post-credits scene, many are banking on the Mad Titan wreaking havoc on the Avengers in the new film. While Whedon has been fairly tight-lipped about the sequel’s story line (outside of the addition of a few new heroes), he did open up recently about the villain.
While speaking to Empire (via Cinema Blend), Whedon discussed the villain of The Avengers 2, without mentioning him by name (he did indicate the villain was male, however—though that doesn’t really narrow it down by much). Further, he went on to discuss his apparent weakness in portraying villains in the past:
“I’m very excited about the villain, and have a lot to say about him. But if you watch my shows, the one thing I’ve never been very good at is guest stars, because I’ve always been interested in the ensemble. With The Avengers, I’m still most fascinated by them.”
Which is an odd thing to say, as some of his TV series villains have emerged as some of his most entertaining characters (Spike, Faith, Glory, etc.).
Whedon went on to mention that he’s trying to avoid the pratfalls of trying to copy what made the first Avengers so successful by simply repeating the best elements:
“I know I will never make a moment as pleasing in a film as Hulk and Loki,” Whedon told the magazine. “You can’t chase that dragon. If you try to do exactly the same thing, the chances you’re going to do it better are very slim, and the only reason for me to devote three years to making another Avengers movie is the hope of making a better one.”
Pretty interesting stuff, but still no official confirmation of the villain. Let the heedless and rampant speculation continue!
