So, this is an interesting day in the world of comic book films: Bryan Singer, who is currently directing X-Men: Days of Future Past (the film the bridges the gap between the original X-Men film trilogy and X-Men First Class via some time travel/parallel universes), tweeted that he has added Evan Peters (American Horror Story) to the cast… to portray Quicksilver, the same character that Joss Whedon had already written into The Avengers 2.
So, how does this all work?
First, Singer’s snarky tweet:
Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.
As we’ve reported earlier this year, Whedon has added Quicksilver and his sister, Scarlet Witch, to The Avengers 2 cast; the two characters were initially featured in the X-Men comics as the children of Magneto, something which would not be mentioned in the new Avengers flick (because Marvel owns the Avengers, but Fox owns the film rights to any and all X-Men).
So, again, how does this all work?
Well, don’t expect Evan Peters to portray Quicksilver in The Avengers 2—as Marvel head Kevin Feige has noted, there will be a strict split to the handling of any characters which may overlap between universes:
We both have [Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch]. There’s a specific arrangement with those two characters that would allow us to use them with “Avengers,” but not discuss or reference their mutant or Magneto-related lineage. They can use them as mutants and as Magneto’s relatives, but cannot have anything to do with “The Avengers.”
So it seems Marvel is free to feature these X-Men characters, as long as no mention is made whatsoever of them being mutants; conversely, the X-Men films cannot mention The Avengers. It seems an odd length for Marvel to go—after all, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch aren’t exactly marquee players, and there are any number of mid-level Marvel characters who could take their place—but they seem to be trusting Whedon’s instincts on this one.
What do you think of the Quicksilver news?
