Following The Avengers’ success as one of the highest-grossing films in human history, Iron Man 3’s opening day ticket sales being the second-highest, well, ever, and the varying (but still solid) success of the Thor, Captain America, and other Iron Man films, Marvel Studios can pretty much write their own ticket at this point. And they have, in terms of expanding their Marvel Cinematic Universe—currently, they are in “Phase Two,” which will bring forth such films as Guardians of the Galaxy, Cap and Thor sequels, The Avengers 2, and the aforementioned Iron Man 3. So, what films can you expect for “Phase Three,” and which won’t be there?
First, what you likely won’t see—it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that Robert Downey Jr. will return for any more Iron Man films. The Avengers, sure, but now that his contract is up with Marvel, an Iron Man 4 anytime in the near future is probably not going to happen. Further, as Coming Soon notes, Marvel head Kevin Feige recently stated that “there are currently no plans” for spin-off films for War Machine or The Falcon (who you’ll see in Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
As for what is coming down the pipe: Marvel is already developing an Avengers 3, along with films featuring Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Iron Fist, and The Runaways, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe just keeps on expanding. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for a Blade reboot, as the rights for that character have now reverted back to Marvel.
What do you think of the Marvel news?
