With Iron Man 3 already in theaters (and doing bang-up business) now is the time to start getting excited for some of the other tentpole releases of the summer, and the other really big superhero movie of the year. Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel is nearly a month away from release, and now they’re starting to show how huge this movie is going to be.
If the first ads for Man of Steel played up a mopey, rudderless Superman/Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), well there’s still some of that, but now we’re getting to see more of General Zod (Michael Shannon), and the machines that threaten to destroy Earth. And going by the most latest ads, it’s going to be a really, really big film. But unlike Iron Man 3, it doesn’t feel like we’ve already seen too much (though by the time the film hits theaters in nearly a month, perhaps we’ll be inundated). Here’s that TV spot:
This looks like it’s got a huge scale, and that’s exciting because the last stab at this material (Bryan Singer‘s Superman Returns) didn’t seem to know what to do with the character when he proved invulnerable to bullets, so they tried to make it about him lifting heavy objects. Already, Man of Steel looks like way more fun, though it’s hard to get a sense of Superman’s interactions with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and The Daily Planet, which you’d think would also play a big role in the movie. We shall see. Man of Steel opens June 14.
