Last month, we reported that Joss Whedon, when discussing his newest draft for The Avengers 2 script, stated that “I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.” Many (including us) speculated that this was a reference to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, a mutant brother and sister due who, while primarily X-Men characters (their dad is Magneto), did cross over into the Avengers to replace Tony Stark/ Iron Man. And it looks like their inclusion in The Avengers 2 has now been confirmed.
Entertainment Weekly has the scoop (via Cinema Blend) in their current cover piece about Iron Man 3. The magazine notes that a source close to the project has confirmed that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will appear in in The Avengers 2 in some capacity, though EW was also quick to note that Whedon has stated that his draft “could change six months from now.”
Now, the fact that these are X-Men characters does not mean that there will be an Avengers and X-Men crossover (Fox currently owns the X-Men rights, and it’s hard to imagine them giving those rights back to Marvel anytime soon). It’s more than likely that Quicksilver and Scarlet’s mutant heritage will be at least moderately ret-conned to eliminate any connection to Magneto or the X-Men.
