Violet And Daisy

We tend to hate on Hollywood studios because of the movie projects they choose to fund (Transformers 4, anyone?). So much of typical Hollywood product tends to be huge, expensive spectacles with little-to-no story, heavy special effects and poor acting. So, we at ScreenCrave have decided to help jump behind the indie film. Every week we’ve been bringing you an Indie Fundraiser Roundup, which features projects seen on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Now we’re adding on to it by including some of the Best Indie Film Trailers Of The Week. Check out this week’s picks below.

  • VIOLET & DAISY: Geoffrey Fletcher‘s directorial debut Violet & Daisy first premiered in 2011 at the Toronto Film Festival. It stars Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan as young teenage assassins who get thrown off guard by their next victim. James Gandolfini and Danny Trejo also have parts in the movie. Fletcher previously wrote the screenplay for the critical hit Precious, but, based on the trailer, Violet & Daisy has a completely different tone from the 2009 drama. According to Deadline, Cinedigm plans to release the film in June, but has yet to lock down a date.

  • FREE SAMPLES: In Free Samples, Jesse Eisenberg tries to charm newcomer Jess Weixler into dating him. The film, which first premiered in 2012 at the Tribeca Film Festival, tells the story of Stanford law-school dropout named Jillian, who finds herself running her best friend’s ice cream truck on the day of her fiance’s birthday. Eisenberg plays the guy who tries to date her, but she barely remembers him from the night before. Free Samples will open in limited release on May 31st.

  • HOW TO MAKE MONEY SELLING DRUGS: How To Make Money Selling Drugs is exactly what you think it is. The documentary exposes how drug dealers do what they do, and also how the Corporate world makes money off of the illegal drug trade. This is an in-depth look at America’s drug problem, but it also offers a guide of how to become a successful dope pusher. Matthew Cooke interviewed celebs like 50 Cent, Woody Harrelson, Eminem, and The Wire‘s creator David Simon. The doc hits VOD on June 18th, followed by a limited theater run on June 26th.

Indie Fundraiser Pick of the Week:

  • THE STRANGE EYES OF DR. MYES: The Strange Eyes of Dr. Myes focuses on the aftermath of Dr. Myes’s near-death experience. Myes is a researcher in the science of perception, and she attempts to graft animal senses to the brain in order to revolutionize human consciousness. She must face the consequences when she uses her own body and mind as a research tool and transforms herself into a creature with super-senses. The film is the first feature-length film by Nancy Andrews, who has created 10 films in the last 18 years, each with a length of 30 minutes. Her films have played at art museums in New York and Los Angeles. You should definitely go check out the campaign for The Strange Eyes of Dr. Myes. This is a truly independent film, which is both personal and strange. So if you’re into that, head over to Kickstarter.
