Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

If you’ll recall, last year Michael Bay essentially enraged the entirety of the internet by both announcing he’d produce a reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, and by noting that “these turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny, and completely lovable.”  And thus, fans freaked out, as Bay appeared to be indicated that the turtles wouldn’t be mutants, but rather aliens from outer space.  Well, he’d now like to clarify a tad.

During a Moviefone interview (via /Film), Bay has noted that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will remain exactly that—mutated turtles, and not an alien race that happen to perfectly resemble anthropomorphic Earth-bound turtles:

There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens. We’re not. It’s the ooze! It’s from the original source material. These are from the original writers, and I never went out to correct myself in the press. I do listen to the fans and I do want this to be authentic. I think they’re going to be really happy with this movie. When I see the digital stuff, the turtles look great.

So, internet, you may rest easy tonight—your turtles will remain turtles, simply mutated into teenage ninjas.  Though, as /Film notes, the original comic book origin of the Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Leonardo (and Splinter) was somewhat extraterrestrial, as the mysterious ooze that does the mutating was an “alien” ooze.  So maybe we can meet Bay in the middle and stop arguing over the ninja turtles.  It’s a thought, at least.

What do you think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles news—happy now?
