Some directors when given a mega-budget seem to make films that grow increasingly incomprehensible and ridiculous; others (like, say, Shane Black with Iron Man 3, Sam Mendes with Skyfall, or Christopher Nolan with The Dark Knight and Inception), can work wonders within the blockbuster wheelhouse. And the WonderCon trailer for the upcoming giant robots vs. giant aliens flick Pacific Rim seems to place Guillermo del Toro in the second camp because, whew, it’s all kinds of insane awesome.
Originally, the trailer was to be a WonderCon exclusive, but, as /Film reports, it seems Warner Bros. is too proud of the results to keep it under wraps. So here it is in all its 2.5 minute glory, in which you see a skyscraper-sized robot pick up a giant ocean liner and use it as a baseball bat against an equally giant and pissed of extraterrestrial. You can’t beat that:
So there you have it—an utterly ridiculous and over the top promo for a film whose premise is utterly ridiculous and over the top, in seemingly all the best ways possible.
Starring Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba, Pacific Rim is set for a July 12 release date.
What do you think of the trailer?
