The Will Gluck-directed, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Jay-Z-produced reboot of Annie may have just cast the second-largest role in the film (Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvuenzhane Wallis will portray the titular orphan), as Jamie Foxx is now in talks to take the Daddy Warbucks character.
If he takes the gig, it will be the latest in an increasing string of high profile roles for the actor, who starred in 2011’s Django Unchained, and is playing the villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (let’s all just pretend that White House Down didn’t happen, which the box office and movie-going public seem to be doing anyway).
The film, written by Emma Thompson and then given a rewrite by Aline Brosh McKenna, reboots the Little Orphan Annie comic strip/ Broadway musical/ film into the present day. Thusly, the heavily-punned name “Oliver Warbucks” is getting a modern reboot as well—the character will now be named Benjamin Stacks. Or, as /Film notes, “Stacks of Benjamins,” which is both moderately annoying and clever at the same time.
Annie is set for a December 25, 2014 release date.
What do you think of the Annie news—can you see Jamie Foxx in the Daddy Warbucks/ Benjamin Stacks role?
