If we have any enthusiasm for this summer’s Red 2, it’s not because of the first film (which was passably entertaining), but because it’s directed by Dean Parisot. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, he was the director behind Galaxy Quest, which is one of the best films of the last fifteen years. Perhaps he has the magic powers to wake Bruce Willis up from sleepwalking through another movie.

It’s easy to kid Willis after this year’s double feature of not trying in A Good Day to Die Hard and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, but just last year he was excellent in both Looper and Moonrise Kingdom, so with Willis it’s all about the material. Hopefully this engages him. In Red 2 he’s joined by Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Helen Mirren for this “old people fight” movie, and so it’s not all senior citizens Byung-hun Lee is there as well. Here’s the trailer:

In the sequel they seem to be doubling up on their weirdos with both Hopkins and Malkovich playing characters that are a bit off, which could get annoying. This trailer makes the film look okay, maybe a little fun, but it’s odd how Zeta-Jones gets to stop the show, as audiences have never been that crazy about her as a performer. Again, with Dean Parisot we’re hopeful. Red 2 opens July 19.

Should there be an Expendables/Red crossover movie?
