One of the biggest head-scratchers of Marvel’s upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series spin-off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was how Joss Whedon and company would manage to explain the return of Clark Gregg’s agent Coulson, as circumstances in The Avengers would seem to preclude his involvement. Just a heads-up, big spoilers ahead.
OK, so if you’re one of the five people who didn’t see The Avengers, he’s some catch-up: S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson was killed by Loki, which motivates the heroic team to avenge his death and save the greater New York area in the process. So it seemed odd that his character would be returning to anchor a new TV series, even if Whedon (long a creator known for killing off characters and then bringing them back to life) was at the helm.
Well, /Film reported today that they have a source close to production, who has indicated to them that Coulson was not mortally wounded in The Avengers, and that Nick Fury helped fake his death in order to motive the Avengers into coming to Earth’s rescue. The series will find Coulson coming out of hiding and being reinstated to full duty.
How does this sound to you—do you buy the “Coulson faked his death” premise?
