MONSTERS UNIVERSITYIf you were wondering if Monsters University was simply a rehash of Revenge of the Nerds (but, you know, kid friendly), the latest trailer makes it pretty clear that everyone involved has watched every college hijinks film from the 70′s and 80′s, and took from it. But it seems the most influential film on MU is unquestionably Nerds, at least going by this new trailer.

The set up is that James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) start off in college as roommates who don’t like each other, but then are forced to join a lesser fraternity and have to win a contest to stay in school. Their teammates look to be a rag-tag collection of lovable losers — though it’s hard to tell if Sully and Mike’s new friends are slovenly — and surely their opponents are a bit snotty (perhaps literally). Here’s the trailer:

The most obvious influence is Revenge of the Nerds, between the loser frat house and the end competition, but there’s at least one homage to National Lampoon’s Animal House in there (the broken guitar), and it’s possible that other great slobs vs. snobs comedies are referenced. This is a plot heavy trailer that sets up the film’s narrative, but is surprisingly not that funny. There’s no great gag here (maybe the shedding bit is the best), but it looks pleasant enough. We’ll know if Pixar delivers when the film hits theaters June 21.
