Sylvester Stallone, who has excitedly taken to Twitter like your annoying aunt who thinks it’s “cute” to Tweet every last random filament of thought flitting through her head, has been using the social media platform to discuss his search for the perfect director for The Expendables 3. Stallone directed the first film, and Simon West directed the second, and Stallone has been pushing for a high profile director for the third. Who did he get?
For some time now, Stallone has been expounding on Twitter that he wanted Mel Gibson or John Woo to helm the third entry, as the first two films didn’t have near enough brutal carnage standing in as a metaphor for catholic guilt, nor did it have enough scenes of characters holding handguns in either hand and leaping towards one another balletic slow motion as doves flew overhead. Unfortunately for Sly, Gibson turned him down, and Woo is currently at work in China.
So, Stallone has surprisingly turned to a semi-unknown: Patrick Hughes, director of the small Australian film Red Hill. Stallone has compared Hughes to the young and hungry artist he himself was during the making of Rocky:
Rent RED HILL. Great Movie!! 500,000 budget 20 day shoot, Amazing – ROCKY was 850,000 and 25 days , Good OMEN!!!
So far, Hughes and Stallone are the only two confirmed talent working on the film thus far. We’ll have more on this as the cast and crew develops.
