Back in the day, studios licensed characters from Marvel, hoping to turn their characters into movie stars. Sony got Spider-Man, Fox had The Fantastic Four and Daredevil, and so on and so on. Now that Marvel is its own studio they’d rather have their characters back in their fold, and recently Marvel confirmed that the rights to Daredevil have reverted back to them.
With Iron Man 3 publicity in full swing, Marvel producer Kevin Fiege was asked about Daredevil and said that Marvel now has him (according to Newsarama). Fox had the character for years and made their own Daredevil movie in 2003 with Ben Affleck, and then had a spin off two years later with Elektra with Jennifer Garner, but neither was deemed a great success. Fox –realizing their license was almost up for it and Fantastic Four – scrambled to reboot both. But while their new FF movie is currently in pre-production, and though they had Joe Carnahan on the Daredevil reboot and he released some pre-visualizations, their Daredevil update couldn’t come together in time.
Now that Marvel owns the character, it will be interesting to see how they restart the character. It seems likely that in the next wave of Marvel’s films (or Phase Two as they like to call it) someone will show up playing Matt Murdoch in either a cameo or supporting role. And we wouldn’t be surprised if he’s introduced in the next Avengers film.
Should Daredevil get his own stand-alone movie again, or just be a part of an Avengers initiative?
