The R.I.P.D. trailer is kind of stunning. Not because of any dazzling special effects, or startling beautiful cinematography, or moving and emotional performance. No, it’s kind of stunning for the sheer amount of plot and characterization it shows the film ripping off from other films. If you want to see a beat for beat remake of the original Men In Black, with Ryan Reynolds in the Will Smith role and Jeff Bridges taking over for Tommy Lee Jones (but doing so while fully enmeshed in his Rooster Cogburn hairstyle, clothes, attitude, and accent from True Grit), then this is the movie for you.
Helmed by Red director Robert Schwentke and based on a comic book, R.I.P.D. tells the story of the Rest In Peace Department, who act as supernatural lawmen and protect the normal world of living humans from dead/ undead threats. So, take Men In Black, switch the aliens for dead people, and you’ve got the movie. Watch the trailer:
All that aside, Bridges is pretty much a joy to watch in anything, so perhaps the film will be salvageable on that score. And who knows, maybe this is just a really derivative trailer. But from this vantage point, it just looks like a rehash.
R.I.P.D. is set for a July 19 release date.
