Fast & Furious 6, coming on the heels of the surprisingly successful Fast Five, is set for a May 24, 2013 release date. And, while it’s still more than a month out, the film is already getting a sequel. That’s right—Fast & Furious 7 is now officially confirmed for a summer 2014 release.
Yes, summer 2014. Specifically, July 11, 2014, just over a year after the May 24 release of Fast & Furious 6. Unlike most franchises, the Fast & Furious series seems to be getting more successful as it goes along, and rumors of a seventh film have been in the air for weeks now, before Universal officially confirmed the news today.
Now, a one-year turnaround for yet another sequel is a pretty break-neck schedule, requiring that the Fast & Furious team must reassemble to begin shooting this summer. One casualty of the summer shooting may be the departure of Dwayne Johnson, whose busy schedule would likely preclude him from shooting.
It wouldn’t be the first time the franchise lost a star, as Cinema Blend notes that Vin Diesel sat out of the franchise’s second film, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and no original cast member was around for Tokyo Drift.
