Another slow week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but hey, hopefully your taxes are done, and you can pick up Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Otherwise, there’s a great classic 80’s film hitting the Criterion collection, and some classic Jackie Chan films.
- Django Unchained: One of the biggest surprises at this year’s Oscars was the wins for Christoph Waltz and Quentin Tarantino’s original screenplay. We’d say they were deserved. Jamie Foxx stars as the titular hero, who goes from being a slave to the fastest gun in the South. With a great supporting cast that includes Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington, there’s a lot to appreciate here.
- The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia: It looks like this film had a brief theatrical run, and is a sequel to the 2009 horror film, which did just okay. I don’t know who this is for.
- Police Story / Police Story II: Two classic Jackie Chan movies are hitting Blu-ray from The Shout Factory, who are doing some great work with cult classics. And with Shout you know that the films will be presented in the right aspect ratio and with the original audio tracks. This is as good a place to start with Jackie Chan films as any.
- Repo Man: “Let’s get Sushi and not pay!” Alex Cox’s best film (it or Sid and Nancy) may be the most 80’s film ever made. Hilarious and intentionally strange, it’s one of the rare films that tries and succeeds at being a cult film
What are you picking up this week?
