Expectations are pretty lofty for Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9, Elysium, and it seems he’s crafted a film to meet those expectations head-on (following a 10-minute sneak-peak, our own Damon Houx compared the film to Christopher Nolan’s Inception and dubbed the film “like District 9 times100.” Set in a dystopic future (is there any other kind in cinema?), Elysium seems to take everything from District 9 (the science fiction elements, the special effects, the focus of class stratification/ immigration/ socio-political issues, the sheer scope) and ramps them way up. Today we’ve got the trailer, and it only further increases expectations for the great-looking film.
In the new film, the year is 2159 and the Earth is essentially a planet-sized ghetto, while Elysium (an orbital space station) is there the wealthy live in extreme comfort and perfect health. Matt Damon plays Max, a man who’s been injured and “agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.” Dig the trailer:
Co-starring Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, Elysium is set for an August 9 release.
