Another day, another look at Baz Luhrman’s reinterpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby as a 3D, CGI-heavy pop explosion featuring the music of Beyonce, Andre 3000, and Lana Del Rey (hey, just like in the 1925 novel!).  The newest trailer focuses heavily on the rage of Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), whose wife, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), is rekindling a romance with the titular and mysterious Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).  Along the way, there are a lot of fistfights, some screaming, and even some vehicular manslaughter.

It’s all a bit much, but perhaps Luhrman is trying to represent the raging glitz and glamour of the roaring ‘20s via the flashy CGI, color schemes, and 3D.  It’s an obvious approach, and one that—in the trailers, anyway—seems to overwhelm the human element of the story (which isn’t exactly Luhrman’s strong suit, to begin with).  But hey, judge for yourself:

Still seems a like way too much style over substance, but that’s what you get when you sign up for a Baz Luhrman film, right?

The Great Gatsby is set to open the 66th Cannes Film Festival, and will premiere on May 10.

What do you think of the trailer?
