While it’s not a bad trailer by any means, the red-band ad for Only God Forgives plays exactly as one would expect the follow-up film from Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn to do: star Ryan Gosling blankly looks at things before exploding in violence, there’s a swoon-heavy soundtrack, and the images are doused in deep red, blue, pink and purple lights.
That said, the brutal action film does look intriguing—it’s a gory revenge film, styled as a “western” that’s set in Bangkok, according to /Film.
In the movie, Gosling runs a Thai boxing club, which he operates as a front for a drug smuggling operation. At some point, Gosling’s brother is murdered, and his mother (a spooky Kristen Scott Thomas) shows up and demands that he get revenge. Eventually, Gosling tracks down the killer only to find that he is “The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both judge and punisher.” So that’s not good. But hey, Gosling plus Refn plus gory and stylized slo-motion violence worked out pretty well the last time.
Only God Forgives, the second collaboration between Gosling and Refn, is set for a July 19th release date.
