This is one of the most pathetic weeks of new releases in quite some time. Seriously, ridiculously under-stuffed. There’s an HBO movie, and one of the cult films that got some attention a while back, and two musicals from Fox. And that’s about it.

  • Hemingway and Gellhorn: HBO’s film by Phillip Kaufman didn’t get the attention that would mark it as a must watch (like their previous adaptation of Mildred Pierce). Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman star in the movie, and I wish I was excited to finally see it.
  • John Dies at the End: From director Don Coscareli (the Phantasm series, Bubba Ho-Tep) comes this would-be cult classic in the making. Weird visuals and a role by Paul Giamatti makes this a definite curio. Note: It’s already on VOD.

  • Hello, Dolly!, That Thing You Do!: Fox is putting out these two musicals now for whatever reason. That Thing You Do! Was Tom Hanks’ debut feature as a director, and it’s charming, but kind of small. Hello Dolly was one of the big elephants at the tail end of the musical boom of the 1960’s. Barbra Streisand stars in the film, and it’s one of those films that has its fans, but has never been all that respected.
