With the first film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hitting DVD and Blu-ray recently, it stands that — following the patterns of The Lord of the Rings movies — we should start seeing some footage for the next film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Well, Peter Jackson hosted an online event with the release of the first Hobbit film on home video, and now we have that look.
Jackson answered questions from fans about the upcoming films, but in the clip below two of those fans happen to be Stephen Colbert and Billy Boyd, aka Peregrine Took from the first trilogy. But it’s the first question about making a middle chapter that offers the footage from the new film. It’s mostly behind the scenes stuff, but we get a glimpse at Orlando Bloom back as Legolas, and brief peeks at new additions to the cast Evangeline Lilly and Stephen Fry. Here’s that video:
We saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey when it was released, and time has not been kind to film (all those four months). The movie dragged out an already lackadaisical narrative to near-excruciating lengths, so it’s hard to get excited for more. Perhaps with the next film, there will be more story to latch on to. But we’re probably in the minority on that one as An Unexpected Journey made over a billion dollars worldwide (one of only fifteen movies to do so). The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is scheduled to open December 13.
Are you excited for more, have you given up or will you go just to get it done?
