18 years after the incredible first film (Before Sunrise) and nine years after the somehow even-better sequel (Before Sunset), director Richard Linklater and stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have returned with Before Midnight, creating a rather unlikely trilogy (in an age when most trilogies concern spaceships, elves, or people who wear capes). The story of two people who love each other (and endlessly talking to one another), the series charts the relationship of Hawke and Delpy’s characters’ on-and-off relationship. A word to fans: don’t watch the trailer if you want to avoid spoilers, or don’t want to know how the ambiguous ending of Before Sunset turned out.
Before Midnight finds the couple Jesse and Celine still together after the events of the second film, and are now parents. And while the trailer begins somewhat sweetly, it begins to hint at the undercurrent of bitterness that develops within long-term relationships. Dig it:
Before Midnight is set for a May 24 release date. And if the early reviews and reactions are to believed, it’s poised to be one of the very best films of 2013.
What do you think of the Before Midnight trailer—will you be seeing the film?
