The plot of the relentlessly mediocre Olympus Has Fallen is this: former Secret Service agent Gerard Butler pulls a Die Hard and acts as a one man army as terrorists take over the White House. And the plot of White House Down is as follows: former Secret Service agent Channing Tatum pulls a Die Hard and acts as a one man army as terrorists take over the White House. But hey, at least White House down isn’t stuck with Gerard Butler, right?
The two similarly plotted films are coming out within three months of each other, which must have the White House Down folks a little worried—Olympus Has Fallen hasn’t exactly set the box office on fire, meaning that audiences may not be hungry for an obvious Die Hard rip-off that takes place inside the White House. But, as /Film notes, the White House Down trailer is aiming for the rooftops with a far more epic and heavy approach, and may be positioning itself as the Armageddon to Olympus Has Fallen’s Deep Impact.
So who knows, maybe Die Hard in the White House fatigue won’t have set in, or will be forgotten, by the time Roland Emmerich’s version comes out on June 28. But seriously, Hollywood, two of these things is enough for one year, ok?
What do you think of the trailer?
