The Hunter's Head

We tend to hate on Hollywood studios because of the movie projects they choose to fund (Transformers 4, anyone?). So much of typical Hollywood product tends to be huge, expensive spectacles with little-to-no story, heavy special effects and poor acting. So, we at ScreenCrave have decided to help jump behind the indie film. Every week we’ll be bring you the Indie Fundraiser Roundup in which we feature projects seen on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that need our help. Check out this week’s picks below.

  • THE HUNTER’S HEAD: The Hunter’s Head is a short adaptation of a short story in Stories for the Nighttime and Some for the Day by Benjamin Loory. The film takes place in a distant time and in a far-away village deep in a forest. One day a hunter comes back carrying a severed human head and the villagers grow afraid of the hunter, except for one boy who begins talking to all of these beaten up heads. Eventually the boy comes to crossroads, and is faced with a decision that will alter the rest of his life.  This is a peculiar story, but filmmaker Colin Harvey is working hard to tell a compelling one. He’s hired a talented VFX artist to help him as well. If you would like to see this project brought to life, head over to Indiegogo to see how you can help.
  • THE MERMAID COMPLEX: In some ways, The Mermaid Complex is a modern version of The Little Mermaid. It tells the story of a girl with a stutter who begins a cyber relationship with a guy she doesn’t know in person. The short film stars Raffaella Melonim, Dayana Mendoza (Miss Universe 2008) and Zane Carney (Big City, Dave’s World). The Mermaid Complex has been shot, and if you head to Kickstarter you’ll be able to see a short trailer. But the filmmakers do need help in the last stage of postproduction. Check out the project for more information.
  • LILY: Set in 1952, Lily is inspired by a ghostly legend at a college with a long, mysterious history. In the film, a quiet girl suddenly disappears from campus. A year later a new girl appears at the school, and a college junior take an interest in her mysterious ways. The makers of Lily hope to start production this spring, but they need help with funds. If you like ghost stories set in old Gothic-like schools, head over to Kickstarter to learn more about how you can help make this project a reality.

Pick of the Week:

  • THIS PARTY OFF MULHOLLAND: The filmmakers of This Party off Mulholland don’t want to spoil the movie for you, so they’ve shared very little on the plot of the story. What they have hinted is that the film is something along the lines of Fargo, Jackie Brown and The Wire. The script reads like a campfire story but with more sex, prettier monsters and pools. The filmmakers, Alex Thompson and Will Trowbridge met in film school in Prague. Since, they’ve gone on to make other films, but are now they’re coming together for This Party Off Mulholland. They’ve managed to get The Wire‘s Delaney Williams to star in the film, and they’re heading into production this May. Alex and Will need help with numerous things, and that’s where you come in. Head over to Kickstarter to see how you can help.

Those are the projects we have for you this week. Be sure to check back every week for our Indie Fundraiser Roundup–helping you help indie cinema.
