After years of making big, dumb, and almost sociopathically stupid CGI-heavy films like The Transformers franchise and The Island, Michael Bay is finally going back to the genre that he began in—big, dumb, and almost sociopathically stupid comedic action films that are well aware how utterly ridiculous they are (see also: Bad Boys, The Rock).  Hence, Pain & Gain, the odd action comedy he was allowed to make in exchange for another Transformer film.  And now we have the red-band trailer.

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie (with some scene-stealing comedy from Rebel Wilson), Pain & Gain is the true story of three Miami-based personal trainers conspired in a kidnapping gone awry in their attempt to cash in their own American Dream.

The film features plenty of Bay tropes—the orange and blue color schemes, the over the top violence, the hyper-muscles stars—but both Bay and the film seem to both be aware of the ridiculousness at hand, and the trailer isn’t half bad.  Is it possible that—gulp—Bay has made film that isn’t simply exhausting to watch?  Anything’s possible.  You’ll be able to find out when the film hits theaters on April 26th.

What do you think of the trailer?
