The Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon—in which a bunch of really, really lonely people read a mediocre novel that began as Twilight fan-fiction and ended up as a weird bondage/sadomasochism romance novel rip-off of 9 ½ Weeks, making it a bestseller—could never have gone unnoticed by Hollywood, which is why plans are underway to adapt the book into a film (of course). Thus far, oAmerican Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has expressed interest in writing the screenplay, and rumors abound that Angelina Jolie wants to direct. Now, we have word on who may star as Christian, the man who enters into a sexually domineering and controlling relationship with the novel’s protagonist, Ana.
Arrow star Stephen Amell now appears to be in the running as Christian Grey, as Cinema Blend reports that the actor discussed the issue with fans on his Facebook page. When asked if he would be participating in the film adaptation of E.L. James’ novel, Amell ambiguously responded with:
“I get questions about Christian Grey all the time. That project is a long way off. I know this because I had a meeting about it. A long way off. I mean, not that long. But not close. I wouldn’t call it long. But I wouldn’t call it close.”
So, Fifty Shades of Grey fans, we leave it to you to figure that one out (we figure you’re used to reading vague, poorly constructed sentences that don’t lead anywhere, anyway). But this is at least a confirmation that Amell has been in talks to star, so there’s something for you.
