Given the massive success of Summit Entertainment’s Twilight film franchise, and its parent company Lionsgate doing quite well with The Hunger Games, it makes sense that Summit would be churning out as many film franchise adaptations of Young Adult novels as it possibly could.  The most recent in the line of ch-ching, ch-ching adaptations?  The futuristic Divergent, which just received a prestigious addition to its cast—Kate Winslet.

In the novel by Veronica Roth, Beatrice “Tris” Prio is a young woman living in a futuristic Chicago.  Social structures and society as we know it have collapsed, and society is now divided into five uniquge factions, and people are selected to enter each of the factions based on an aspect of their personality that the faction in questions values above all else.  However, at the age of 16, “Tris” takes the faction test and discovers she is ‘Divergent,’ meaning that she will not fit into any group; later, she discovers a plot to kill all Divergents.

The film already stars Shailene Woodley as “Tris,” other cast members include Theo James, Jai Courtney, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort and Maggie Q.  Winslet has been now been added to the cast, and will play Jeanine Matthews, who leads the Erudite faction (a.k.a., all the smart folks).

Divergent is set for a 2014 release date.
