A trailer for a sequel that—gasp!—actually seems somewhat entertaining, the new ad for Despicable Me 2 finally lays out the plot for the new film, while tossing in what everyone liked from the last film—those weird little yellow pill-shaped things called Minions.
Oh, and Eminem inexplicably shows up on the soundtrack, because that’s what the kids love these days is some Eminem. Oh, and there are some jokes about the kids and those wacky cell phones they carry these days. But aside from a few bad stand-up comedy clunkers, it’s a cute trailer that finds the supervillain, Gru (Steve Carell), being hired by the Anti-Villain League to stop an all-new super-baddie (voiced by Al Pacino). The remainder of the cast is filled out by Kristen Wig, Steve Coogan, Russell Brand, Miranda Cosgrove, and Ken Jeong.
So there you have it: some cute gags with tasers, some Minions, and an underwater car. Again, it’s not laugh-out-loud funny, but it’s cute.
The original Despicable Me directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud have both returned to direct. Despicable Me 2 is set for July 3 release date.
