Last month, we reported that James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy cast its hero with Chris Pratt. And now, after several names were in the running, the film also has its Drax the Destroyer—former pro wrestler Dave Bautista (The Man with the Iron Fists, Riddick) will play the big bald green guy.
The Hollywood Reporter (via /Film) notes that Bautista has officially signed his deal and is set to take the role of Drax. In the comics, Drax began life as Arthur Douglas, a human being whose family was slaughtered by Thanos (the big bad featured in the post-credits scene in The Avengers). This leads another character, Kronos, to take Douglas’ spirit give it a new, more powerful body—Drax the Destroyer (we know, it’s convoluted). Drax, in addition to being super-strong and able to fly, can shoot energy from his hands.
/Film notes that Drax is the “muscle” of the Guardians of the Galaxy, while Christ Pratt’s Star-Lord is the “real lead.” And now that Drax and Star-Lord are cast, Gunn simply has to find actors to play Gamora the female alien, Groot the tree (yes, he is a tree), and Rocket Racoon. Who is a raccoon.
Guardians of the Galaxy is set for an August 1, 2014 release.
