Veronica Mars was a television series that ran from 2004 to 2007, and featured Kristen Bell as a high school (and later, college) student who would moonlight as a detective, with help from her private investigator dad. Despite a devoted fan following, the series became yet another in the long line of excellent but cancelled (due to low ratings) TV shows. And, as /Film notes, ever since its cancellation there have been rumors of a Veronica Mars movie spin-off. Now the creator, Rob Thomas, and stars of the series have taken to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to finally make the film a reality.
Here’s how it works—if the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter can generate $2 million in funds by April 12th, Warner Bros. has “agreed to market, promote and distribute” the film, which is a rather savvy way for the studio to test the waters and see if there’s enough fan interest in the film to make it marketable.
As such, the cast and creator of Veronica Mars have come together with a cute reunion video/plea for help, along with a Kickstarter that comes packed with several rewards for the donators (including a speaking role in the film). If the necessary funds are generated, shooting will begin this summer, with a projected 2014 release date.

As for the film’s plot, Thomas states it thusly:
Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith’s chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn’t taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favorite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion.
