You’ve got to give it to Disney—those folks are really living in amazing fantasy land. Despite the fact that Guillermo del Toro is already producing a new version of Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson that will film later this year, that Silent Hill director Christophe Gans is pitching his own version of Beauty and the Beast, and the fact that The CW and ABC are both launching two separate pilots for two separate Beauty and the Beast pilots, Disney is pushing for its own “dark reimagining” of Beauty and the Beast. Because, you know, as The AV Club points out, such similar films as Jack the Giant Slayer, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Mirror, Mirror have done so well.
Yes, despite all of those facts, Disney is planning a live action version of the tale, which will also be in 3D (of course), will be “dark,” called The Beast, and will be written by Joe Ahearne (Trance). It’s an odd gamble from Disney, seeing as how filmgoers have been rejecting these live-action fairy tale reimaginings with a lack of ticket sales for the past year and a half, but hey—perhaps being the producers of the happiest place on Earth leads to a little bit of denial.
