A few weeks ago, rumors began to slip out that a major portion of The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3 would concern the Hulk, and his storylines from the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk graphic novels (in which the Avengers, fearful of Hulk’s destructive power, send him into space; the big green guy then crash lands on an alien planet, becomes a gladiator there, then a ruler, and then returns to Earth to have his revenge). But now, Avengers director Joss Whedon is putting the kibosh on such talk.
Just a week after stating that Hulk is “a tricky son of a bitch” because “half of it’s a superhero, half of it’s a werewolf” and that a successful Hulk standalone film would incredibly difficult to make, Whedon has now come out stating that a Planet Hulk storyline is unlikely to happen. Or, in his words:
“Well, I’m not really supposed to comment, but no, that’s ridiculous.”
So, Hulk fans, it looks like you’ll have to deal with a series of films in which your hero isn’t shot into space to become an alien gladiator before returning to conquer his villains on Earth which, after looking at the plot written out like that, looks a little, well, dumb. So perhaps we’re better off without it.
What do you think of the Hulk news?
