While The Avengers was something of a problematic blockbuster (a dud of a first half-hour, a mega deus ex machine ending), there was one element that everyone seems to agree worked out just fine—Mark Ruffalo’s Banner/ Hulk character. So, of course, there have been the inevitable solo Hulk film rumors (despite the first two not being overwhelming successes), as well as rumors that The Avengers 2 would concern Hulk being exiled from Earth and later returning in The Avengers 3 for revenge. Well, according to Avengers mastermind Joss Whedon, don’t expect a Hulk movie anytime soon.
/Film notes that during a question/answer session at the Glasgow Film Festival, Whedon was asked if he could imagine Ruffalo’s Hulk getting his own movie:
Yes. But it would be very, very hard. Hulk is a tricky son of a bitch. He’s the Claudio of superheroes. Because the problem is it’s a very popular character, but it’s not a superhero. Half of it’s a superhero, half of it’s a werewolf. And you can’t structure it like a superhero movie, you can’t light it like a superhero movie. How do you develop that? It would be extremely difficult. The one thing you would have in your favour would be Mark Ruffalo. But right now I don’t know if they have plans to do that or not, because he works so well as part of a greater whole, but by himself, it’s tough. I don’t envy the guys who went before.
That said, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has stated that he is far more optimistic about a Ruffalo Hulk film, given the character’s popular reception in The Avengers.
/Film also briefly noted that AICN sourced have debunked the Planet Hulk storylines of Avengers 2 and 3, stating the storyline would not allow enough screentime for the Banner side of the character.
The Avengers 2 is set for a 2015 release date.
