Horror films seem to go in cycles. We’ve had ironic thrillers, torture porn, found footage, and more, but the classics never go out of style. And James Wan‘s The Conjuring looks to be a classic haunted house-style film. It stars Lili Taylor, Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga and Ron Livingston, and now there’s a trailer for this summer thriller.
The trailer doesn’t give us much to go on, but in a good way. We see that Lili Taylor is a mother of two, and when playing games with her daughters she hears something that she thinks might be her daughter, but turns out to be a ghost, or spirit, or something. And what’s kind of great about the trailer is that it’s set around two incidents, so it has a clean narrative drive for a trailer – you’re getting set up, but intriguing set up. Here’s that trailer:
And that’s a nice spooky shot of the wardrobe. Director James Wan got his start in the Saw films, which have their cult following, but were never all that respected (though the first film got some kind words upon release, the franchise quickly became only for the faithful). But he showed he didn’t need hardcore violence with his recent film Insidious, which mined similar terrain as this film. We’ll know how similar when the film opens this summer on July 19.
