It’s surprising that a film that – on the surface – seemed like a “don’t touch” remake of a horror classic has become one of our most anticipated films of the year, but such is Evil Dead, Fede Alvarez‘s take on the classic low-budget Sam Raimi film. We’re still a couple weeks away from the film’s release, but now there’s new images and a new poster to get us excited.
Though it seems that more people know the jokier sequels that – by the third film – had reduced the horror elements to virtually nil, the first film is a classic of DIY filmmaking, and the sort of low budget horror film that gets by because of the energy and innovation. And, as Joe Bob Briggs noted at the time, one of the big elements of the first film was that anyone could die at any time (though considering how only one of the cast members is still actively working, that surprise might be a little muted).
But if you watch it again, and then watch the trailer for the new movie, it seems they’ve found new possibilities with the material, and some insane gross out gags that, now that they’re being done with a real budget and real actors, could be just as if not more effective. It looks like this new version has teeth. Evil Dead is due to hit theaters April 5. Here are those images:
