James Bond franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson infamously made a misstep following the success of Casino Royale by hiring Marc Forster to helm Quantum of Solace (the man simply can’t shoot his way out of a paper bag if a moving camera or action sequence is required); so it comes as no surprise that the 007 producers are aiming to replicate the success of the Sam Mendes-directed Skyfall by hiring…Sam Mendes.
Yes, it looks more and more likely that Sam Mendes will return to the director’s chair for what is now being called Bond 24. UK Daily Mail (via Cinema Blend) notes that Mendes is currently 75% committed to signing on for another 007 adventure. Skyfall screenwriter John Logan is already at work on the script.
It’s a sharp move on the part of Broccoli and Wilson—while Mendes’ track record has been hit or miss at times within his overall filmography, his entry into the Bond series was a gorgeously shot (thanks to Roger Deakins) love letter to the entire franchise, and fans responding by seeing the film in droves. So let’s hope Mendes closes that remaining 25% and signs on the dotted line soon.
