NBC plans to make Christina Ricci and Parker Posey household names, as the network has cast each to star in two new comedy pilots, hoping to finally launch a successful new series. Also, they need something to fill in the empty whole left by 30 Rock, and pretty soon, The Office.
Deadline reports that Ricci is finalizing a deal to the play the lead in Girlfriend In A Coma,. Unfortunately it won’t be based on The Smiths‘ song (though we’d like to see that!). Anyway, said series (created by Nurse Jackie co-creator Liz Brixius, and Dick Wolf) is about a woman who wakes up from a super-long coma only to discover that she has a 17-year-old daughter from a pregnancy she was unaware of when she went into her deep, dark slumber. Just in case it wasn’t clear, Ricci would play the mom.
Posey’s been cast as the lead in an untitled comedy by DJ Nash (Up All Night) and Jason Bateman. The series focuses on a divorced family, where the mother (Posey) is “entering a newfound adolescence,” and the son idolizes his blind father.
Neither actress has had much luck conquering TV fame lately. Ricci’s Pan Am series failed at ABC and Fox cancelled Posey’s The Return of Jezebel James after airing only three episodes. Maybe NBC will have better luck.
Do you think these will be successful TV comedies?
