Every year during Christmastime  there are two versions of How The Grinch Stole Christmas that play on televisions around the world. First there’s the charming short animated movie made by Chuck Jones in the late sixties, and then there’s that other movie that nobody really likes to accept as part of the cannon, aka the 2000 live-action movie The GrinchUniversal Studios may be dipping into the Grinch pool one more time from the looks of it.

After the success last year with another Dr. Seuss property, The Lorax, they’ve decided to take the 3D animated route with The Grinch. The Grinch is such a beloved property, one of the most iconic Dr. Seuss stories out there, that this doesn’t come off as much of a surprise. There’s money to be made, but it doesn’t appear as it the need for another Grinch movie is necessary. Plenty of us re-watch the Chuck Jones version year after year. We wonder what they’ll do with the story a third time around.

There’s currently nobody on board to write or direct the project, but Universal has it slated for a Christmas 2014 to 2015 release. Illumination Entertainment, the same company behind Despicable Me and The Lorax will be behind the production. At the very least it’ll have the same gorgeous Dr. Seuss aesthetic through their own flowing animation. Fingers crossed that they pick a better voice cast together, as in don’t cast people to voice characters that are barely ten and they sound like they’re in their twenties.
