For those of you not colossally disappointed with The Amazing Spider-Man (the Lizard didn’t work at all, the action and CGI were underwhelming, and didn’t the hero totally lie and screw over an honorable dead man at the end?), you’ll be happy to know that director Marc Webb has begun production on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in order to meet the film’s May 2, 2014 release date.  And now, Sony has released and official plot summary, which notes Electro, as well as another potential Spider-Man villain.  Rhino, however, is not mentioned.

The film’s press release notes that it is the first Spider-Man film ever to be filmed entirely in New York State and New York City.  As for the plot, well, it’s fairly generic and in broad strokes only, so don’t expect a lot of detail.  Basically, Electro is confirmed as a villain, and Harry Osborn “returns” (despite, you know, not being a character in the The Amazing Spider-Man, so it’s not clear exactly what he is “returning” from), and Spider-Man is totally screwing over a dead cop by spending time with the daughter he swore to avoid and protect:

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

Well, there you have it.  The franchise seems on track to underwhelm us all over again in May of next year.

What do you think of the Spider-Man news?
