Al Pacino will tackle another iconic real-life killer for HBO Films. He previously played Jack Kevorkian, a.k.a. Dr. Death, in the cable network’s film You Don’t Know Jack, and now he’s starring in (and as) Phil Spector, alongside Helen Mirren. The first trailer for the TV movie has been released, check it out.
In the trailer we see Pacino wearing crazy wigs, shooting guns and yelling things like, “The first time you got felt up, guess what? You were listening to one of my songs!” Pacino displays a great deal of intensity, and he’s great as Spector, but there’s also a campy tone that feels kind of odd. Maybe it’s the wigs. Here it is:
Written and directed by David Mamet (who some sadly know as Zosia Mamet‘s dad), Phil Spector focuses on the legendary producer’s 2007 murder trial, where he was accused of murdering actress Lana Clarkson. The film also explores the relationship between Spector and defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden (Mirren).
Jeffrey Tambor, Rebecca Pidgeon and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star. And the film premieres on HBO on March 24th.
Spector’s first trial resulted in a deadlock jury (a.k.a. mistrial). In 2008, he was tried again, and convicted the next year. He’s currently serving a 19-years-to-life sentence in a California prison. The HBO film’s focus is on the first trial, but maybe it’ll include his tragic ending behind bars. Regardless, there won’t be a happy ending for Pacino’s character. But we’re excited to see him lose his temper and yell all kinds of shenanigans.
